SIBU: Tourism authorities should consider making the Orang Ulu ‘kuman bahek’ tradition one of the main tourism products for Belaga, especially in Bakun Dam water catchment area.

The ‘kuman bahek’ or picnic is a much loved tradition where the people get together at scenic spots at river banks to socialise besides eating, drinking, singing traditional songs and dancing, a form of activity that can help enhance ties and harmony.

A community leader, Pemanca Umek Jeno, last Friday made the suggestion to Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Joseph Salang during ‘Program Merakyatkan Seni’ at Sungai Asap community hall.

According to Umek, the many islands formed when the dam is fully filled up would make ideal spots for such recreational activity.

“We hope the tourism authorities can help develop ‘kuman bahek’ as another unique tourism product besides the adventure, culture and eco-tourism that Bakun can offer.

“When this is done, there will be greater job opportunities for the locals,” he said, adding that it would help to promote Orang Ulu traditional cuisine.

Concurring with Umek, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Billy Abit Joo believed that it would attract foreign tourists as it is held in a jungle setting beside the clear waters of Bakun.

“We can even offer them fish from Bakun itself when the rearing of fish in cages is carried out,” he added.
